Caere

Burrow of the necropolis of Banditaccia

A few kilometres from the Tirrehenian coast near the Bracciano Lake, there are the remains of the city of Caere, in which the Etruscan name was Chisra, corresponding to the actual town of Cerveteri. The necropolis of Sorbo surrounds it, where was found the famous tomb of Regolini-Galassi and those of Banditaccia and of Mount Abetone.

For its trading, Caere could utilise the shipping ports of Pyrgi, of Alsium (near Palo) and of Punicum, this permitted a great development of the town, especially around the VII to VI century B.C., an age in which dates back to the tomb with the major precious refurbishing. At this period dates in fact bronze furnishings, fine goldsmith's art work, bucchero mixture ceramics and a notable number of vases of eastern origin, imported from places such as Corinth.

The National Museum of Cerveteri now accommodates many exhibits found in this area.
