The History of Santa Severa Castle

 Air view of the castle

The area surrounding the castle results that it was frequented at least from about IV millennium B.C. as documented by the discoveries found in the course of the excavations of the Government Department of Archaeology in 1959. From the Bronze Age a small settlement was situated to the south of the castle, near the sea, a short distance from a perpetual spring of fresh water, probably a point of reference for the navigators of this age. Recent under water exploration conducted in the water in front of the castle, found at about 4m. deep, the presence of a paleoalveus of a river and the remains of the structure dug into the natural rock bank, refers to the settlement that dates from about the start of the II millennium B.C.
